Here is a summary of answers to three questions - How to Recognise Creativity In Organizations? How To Value Creativity In Organizations? and How To Measure Creativity in Organizations? that surfaced in a World Cafe session run at the Hargraves Institute Conference March 2011. The purpose of the World Cafe session was to surface and revalidate the thinking behind the survey and statistical design at the core of the Management Innovation Index through using a public audience (approximately 30 delegates participated).

“Flying people, not planes”: The CEO of Bombardier on building a world-class culture - McKinsey Quarterly 

Pierre Beaudoin explains how a company driven by engineering goals learned to focus on customer expectations, teamwork, and continuous improvement. Canada’s Bombardier was founded in 1942 to make snowmobiles and similar equipment. Today, it makes trains and airplanes and is the world’s number-one train manufacturer and number three in civil aircraft.1 The company’s revenue and stock price have held up during the downturn. Over the past couple of years, it has significantly boosted its investments for growth, most notably an entirely new airplane design: the CSeries, a transcontinental commercial airliner with significantly lower emissions and running costs than existing planes have.

This article provides an historical overview over the last 100 years of the development and affects of applied creative thinking in organizations and asks the question why creativity has not been better understood as an organisational or business process; analysizes the findings of a 2008 major national research project entitled ‘Is Australian management creative and innovative?” in the context of contemporary creative practice in organisations and offers a benchmarking system – the Management Innovation Index™ as a way for organizations to model their creative ecology and over time, using the organisation’s key measures for success, to educate specifically to improve management innovation practice and productivity and ultimately to predict the outcomes of the organization’s creativity and innovation behaviours.
