It's been a while since we posted here because of all the craziness surrounding the launch of our book, The Power of Pull, but we are happy to announce that we're going to be resuming a regular schedule of postings to build on the themes in our book. We thought we would kick off our new postings by summarizing some of the ideas from Pull that resonated the most in our many conversations from the last few months. from The Power of Pull. The Red Queen was optimistic. Nearly everybody in management is familiar with the Red Queen effect, taken from Lewis Carroll's Through the Looking Glass: this is the notion that "It takes all the running you can do, to keep in the same place."

Creating Passion with Managed Emotions - Dan Rockwell

Passionate leaders are intensely focused on clear targets. Emotional leaders express unmanaged feelings that typically hinder progress and hamper relationships. Leaders need passion. On the other hand, unmanaged emotion is counterproductive. John Maxwell expresses the benefit of focused intensity when he says, “A great leader’s courage to fulfill his vision comes from passion…” Effective leaders embrace their passion. At the same time they manage their emotions. How can leaders who lean toward the emotional side manage their emotions? I suggest, turning your emotions inward rather than releasing them like an avalanche on others. I know I’m breaking with established thinking. Everyone seems to say, “Express don’t suppress your emotions.” However, turning emotion inward isn’t suppression. It’s embracing, internally managing, and intentionally focusing emotional energy.

The Element - Sir Ken Robinson's new book on Finding your Passion.

I have to admit a bias to commence. I am a huge fan of Sir Ken Robinosn.  I await the release of his every essay or book as if I was a teenager waiting the release of a new Blondie album - expectant, knowing I already strongly identify with the band; luxuriating in the new sounds and lyrics that abound as the new songs are revealed - all the time trying to identify the cultural influences that have formed this new creation. I go through exactly the same process with Sir Ken Robinson.
